 बंदर का हृदय

 किसी नदी के तट पर एक वन था। उस वन में एक बंदर निवास करता था, जो वन के फल आदि खा कर अपना निर्वाह करता था। नदी में एक टापू भी था और टापू और तट के बीच में एक बड़ी सी चट्टान भी थी। जब कभी बंदर को टापू के फल खाने की इच्छा होती वह उस चट्टान पर उस टापू पर पहुँच जाता और जी भर अपने मनचाहे फलों का आनंद उठाता।

उसी नदी में घड़ियालों का एक जोड़ी भी रहती थी। जब भी वह उस हृष्ट-पुष्ट बंदर को मीठे-रसीले फलों का आनंद उठाते देखती तो उसके मन में उस बंदर के हृदय को खाने की तीव्र इच्छा उठती। एक दिन उसने नर घड़ियाल से कहा, "प्रिय ! अगर तुम मुझसे प्रेम करते हो तो मुझे उसका हृदय खिला कर दिखा दो," नर घड़ियाल ने उसकी बात मान ली।

दूसरे दिन बंदर जैसे ही टापू पर पहुँचा नर-घड़ियाल टापू और तट के बीच के चट्टान के निचले हिस्से पर चिपक गया। वह बंदर एक बुद्धिमान प्राणी था। शाम के समय जब वह लौटने लगा और तट और टापू के बीच के चट्टान को देखा तो उसे चट्टान की आकृति में कुछ परिवर्तन दिखाई पड़ा। उसने तत्काल समझ लिया कि जरुर कुछ गड़बड़ी है। तथ्य का पता लगाने के लिए उसने चट्टान को नमस्कारकरते हुए कहा, "हे चट्टान मित्र ! आज तुम शांत कैसे हो ? मेरा अभिवादन भी स्वीकार नहीं कर रही हो ? " घड़ियाल ने समझा, शायद चट्टान और बंदर हमेशा बात करते रहते हैं इसलिए उसने स्वर बदल कर बंदर के नमस्कार का प्रत्युत्तर दे डाला। बंदर की आशंका सत्य निकली। बंदर टापू में ही रुक तो सकता था मगर टापू में उसके निर्वाह के लिए पर्याप्त आहार उपलब्ध नहीं था। जीविका के लिए उसका वापिस वन लौटना अनिवार्य था। अत: अपनी परेशानी का निदान ढूंढते हुए उसने घड़ियाल से कहा, "मित्र ! चट्टान तो कभी बातें नहीं करती ! तुम कौन हो और क्या चाहते हो?" दम्भी घड़ियाल ने तब उसके सामने प्रकट हो कहा, " ओ बंदर ! मैं एक घड़ियाल हूँ और तुम्हारा हृदय अपनी पत्नी को खिलाना चाहता हूँ। " तभी बंदर को एक युक्ति सूझी। उसने कहा, " हे घड़ियाल ! बस इतनी सी बात है तो तुम तत्काल अपनी मुख खोल दो, मैं सहर्ष ही अपने नश्वर शरीर को तुम्हें अर्पित करता हूँ।" बंदर ने ऐसा इसलिए कहा कि वह जानता था कि जब घड़ियाल मुख खोलते हैं, तो उनकी आँखें बंद हो जाती हैं।

फिर जैसे ही घड़ियाल ने अपना मुख खोला, बंदर ने तेजी से एक छलांग उसके सिर पर मारी और दूसरी छलांग में नदी के तट पर जा पहुँचा।

इस प्रकार अपनी सूझ-बूझ और बुद्धिमानी से बंदर ने अपने प्राण बचा लिए। Vanarendra-Jataka, MathuraThe crocodile O nce, there lived a big and strong monkey on the bank of a river. In the middle of the river, there was an island, which bore seasonal fruits like mangoes and jack-fruits. The island was at a distance of one-leap from a large piece of rock, which lay in between the island and the bank.   The monkey often used the rock as a spring-board to jump at the island to enjoy its fruits.

A crocodile also lived in the river with his wife. She was very dear to him. One day, the female crocodile expressed the desire to eat the heart of the monkey. So, she asked the crocodile to catch the monkey and bring her his heart, if he loved her. The crocodile readily agreed and dipped into the river to catch the monkey.

That day, when the monkey was enjoying the fruits in the island, the crocodile went to the lone rock, which the monkey used as a jumping pad to reach the island, and cuddled about it. Upon his return the monkey noticed that the rock looked bigger than its usual size. He instantly suspected that something was amiss. He thought, �Perhaps, some crocodile was hiding behind it!�. To verify the reality, he then spoke to the rock, �Dear Rock ! Why are you silent, today? Why dont you say hello to me, today?� The crocodile thought that the rock, indeed, was a talking rock. So he responded on behalf of the rock by saying, �Dear monkey, how do you do?� Now, the monkey knew that his suspicion was not unfounded. To further confirm the presence of the enemy, he shouted, �The rocks are not supposed to speak. Now, I know somebody is behind it.  Would you come out and reveal your identity?�

The crocodile then came out behind the rock and proudly declared his identity; and also his intention to eat his heart. The monkey was caught into the devil and the deep sea! Staying back in the island was not desirable because the place could hardly provide him enough food to survive there much longer. So, he decided to return to his abode on the bank. So, to devise his escape he bluffed, �Sir! As I cannot escape now; I would like to offer my body to you. Should you open your mouth, I would straight way jump into it�. The monkey was wise, he knew that once a crocodile opened up its jaw, its eyes would be closed. The crocodile agreed and no sooner than he opened up his jaws his eyes were shut. Taking advantage of the situation the clever monkey jumped upon the crocodiles head and darted on the bank safely.  

When the crocodile opened up his eyes and saw the monkey safe on the bank he praised the latters wisdom by saying:

O Monkey ! With the combination of the truth, foresight,

Strong determination and fearlessness one always routs the enemy.
